ALDI Süd is embarking on an initiative to gain a deep understanding of what its rivals are offering. Together, let’s revolutionize retail by harnessing available data for comprehensive product comparison and leveraging findings for enhanced negotiations, product development and growth. On-site research was yesterday. At HerHackathon we are not sending you to stores collecting data. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, involves developing a cutting-edge solution that leverages technology to dissect and compare the intricate details of product attributes directly from their images that you can find on the internet. From the depths of ingredients lists to the specifics of nutritional values and labels/certifications (gluten-free, vegan, fair trade), your tool will analyze product data captured directly from images sourced from websites or maybe even leaflets. This task demands a blend of skills: OCR (Optical Character Recognition) for text extraction, AI for image recognition and data comparison, and a dash of creativity to design a user-friendly interface that presents complex data in an easily digestible format. 

This challenge is your opportunity to not only showcase your technical prowess. By enabling Aldi Süd to benchmark its products against competitors’ offerings accurately, your solution will fuel informed decision-making and product development, steering the retail giant toward offerings that best meet consumer needs.

FAQ

Our talent-community is very diverse, with women representing over 40 nationalities, aged 18 to 56 (average age 28). Notably, more than 60% bring practical job experience, including 43% with over two years in their respective fields. Our members come from various backgrounds, including front-end and back-end developers, UX designers, data scientists, engineers, and experts in marketing and finance.

Typically, a cross-functional team consisting of members from the IT, HR, and communication departments collaborates on a range of activities. These include defining the challenge, distributing marketing materials, and executing communication initiatives. It is advisable to designate at least one coordinator for effective management.

Throughout the application phase, spanning 8 weeks, the team should be prepared to review between 10 to 50 applications per week. As the event approaches, one week prior to the commencement and during the three on-site event days, it is essential to ensure multiple team members are available to provide guidance and information to the talents.For additional details on the timeline, please refer to the provided documentation

Typically, participants retain full rights to their ideas. However, the challenge setter reserves the option to engage in further discussions with participants if needed, to clarify the ownership of the deliverables. This flexibility ensures a fair and transparent approach to idea ownership.

Our outreach strategy is multifaceted. In addition to our existing talent-Pool, we engage with a thriving community of over 5,000 talents through a combination of social media postings and newsletters. Additionally, we employ paid ads to specifically target potential attendees. Finally, we maintain close connections with universities, coding schools, tech initiatives, press-representatives and other strategic partners who assist in disseminating event information. This comprehensive approach ensures maximum visibility and engagement for our event.

Typically, approximately 60% of talent applications are accepted by our challenge setters when their profiles align with our requirements. This acceptance process not only leads to immediate direct hires, which can vary from one to three individuals, but it also has a longer-term, indirect impact.

We add accepted talents to our talent pool, maintaining ongoing communication with them and reaching out when suitable positions become available. This approach keeps us connected with candidates who may remember our organization, recommend us, or choose to apply for opportunities at a later date. It’s a strategic way to build lasting relationships and ensure a steady flow of potential talent.

You have the opportunity to select 25 talents to work on your challenge from a pool of 500 applications. During the event, you’ll have access to a booth and a designated room for briefings. Additionally, 8 event tickets are provided for your colleagues to join.

We want to make your experience as seamless as possible, so we take care of all the associated costs, including marketing, venue, catering and even the prize money. Our goal is to ensure you can fully focus on your challenge and make the most of the event without worrying about logistical or financial matters.
